Cystectomy surgery is recommended in patients with cancer that begins in the urinary bladder or has spread to the urinary bladder. It is also an option for patients with a tumour that affects the functioning of the urinary bladder or with an injury or obstruction of the urinary bladder.
The surgery involves a partial or complete removal of the urinary bladder. In case of a complete removal (radical cystectomy), it may also require removal of the seminal vesicles and the prostrate (in men) and uterus and ovaries (in women). The surgeon then creates a new way to hold and discharge urine. It is a complex surgery and requires general anaesthesia. After the procedure, the patient is required to stay at the cystectomy hospital in India for a few weeks till complete recovery is achieved.
