We have performed malleable and three piece implants (Coloplast and AMS) in a select group of candidates routinely with astounding success. About 90%-95% of inflatable prosthesis implants produce erections suitable for intercourse. Who is the Right Candidate for Penile Implants?

Most men with erectile dysfunction can successfully be treated with medications or penis pumps (vacuum constriction device). However, penile implants are considered if you aren’t a candidate for other treatments or if other methods fail to give you the desired erection, enough for sexual activity. It can also be used as a treatment option for Peyronie’s disease. Penile implants are of two types –Inflatable implants and Semi rigid rods.

You might be cautioned against penile implants if you have:

  • An infection such as urinary tract infection or pulmonary infection
  • Situational ED (as a result of relationship conflict)
  • Dermatitis
  • Wounds or skin lesions on your scrotum or penis

It must be noted that penile implants only help men achieve an erection and does not increase the penis size, sexual desire or sensation. Expect your penis to be a bit shorter than it used to be, post the implants.

Preparing for The Surgery

  • Once you are with your doctor, be prepared to discuss your present and past medical conditions in detail. Tell him about any medications that you have been taking or any surgeries that you have had in the past.
  • Be ready for a physical exam which will be performed by the doctor to confirm the nature of your ED and ensure that it’s the only treatment option available for you.
  • It is important for you to understand the procedure and the type of penile implant that’s the best for you. You will be explained about the benefits, risks, and complications associated with each.

What to Expect from the Surgery?

Penile implants surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes about 45 minutes to an hour. You are given IV antibiotics and the surgery site is shaved to reduce the chances of infection. An incision is made at the base or head of the penis or in the lower abdomen. The spongy tissue, responsible for erection inside each of the two hollow chambers called corpora cavernosa, is stretched by the surgeon. The ideal sized implant is selected and placed inside the penis.

When implanting a two-piece inflatable device, a valve and pump are placed inside the scrotum. For a three-piece device, a fluid reservoir is also implanted under the abdominal wall, through an internal incision. Once the device is in place, the incisions are sewn closed by the surgeon.

Precautions to Take After the Surgery

You would be sent home with a prescription of pain killers and antibiotics that help prevent infection. You also need to keep your penis up on your lower abdomen, pointing towards your belly button to prevent downward curvature during the healing process. Strenuous physical or sexual activity can be resumed four to six weeks post the surgery.
