Hyderabad, Dec 28 (UNI) A team of surgeons from different disciplines lead by Dr. Vipin Goel, Senior Consultant, Surgical oncology, CARE Hospitals performed a rare life saving surgery on a 23-year-old woman and her unborn baby who was diagnosed with cancer in the lower part of the anterior abdominal wall at 34 weeks of pregnancy.
The patient visited the hospital with complaint of huge swelling in the lower part of the anterior abdominal wall. Local examination revealed the presence of a large immobile swelling approximately 25*20*15cm on the left lower side of the anterior abdominal wall with ulceration of the surface of abdomen.
Dr. Vipin Goel along with Dr. Ravichandra, Plastic Surgeon, CARE Hospitals, Dr. Rajani, Gynecologist, CARE Hospitals, and Dr. TVS Gopal, Anaesthetist, CARE Hospitals planned the surgeries for hours to make sure that both the mother and the baby are safe and healthy. The plan was to deliver the baby normally avoiding cesarean section and later plan for cancer treatment.
Explaining the surgery, Dr. Vipin Goel, Senior Consultant, Surgical oncology, CARE Hospitals said, “Initially, it presented a huge dilemma on who should be give the top most priority –the cancer patient or the baby thriving in the abdomen. What made it more difficult was that it was impossible to take up the patient for a Caesarean section as the tumor was large in size occupying the almost complete lower part of the anterior abdominal wall giving absolutely no space to make an incision for caesarean section.”
With a close watch on the vitals of the baby and mother, the team of doctors at CARE Hospitals were able to conduct normal delivery and the baby was born healthy.
“A week later we planned for cancer surgery. She underwent wide local excision of the tumor with 2 cm of margin all round followed by reconstruction of anterior abdominal wall with Right Anterolateral thigh flap,” Dr. Goel added.
The intra and postoperative period were uneventful and the patient recovered. She was discharged on the fifth day post the surgery. Dr. Goel is in constant touch with the patient and helping her in the post recovery phase. CARE hospital also significantly reduced the patient’s bill keeping in mind the tough times and request from the patient and her family, a hospital release here said on Monday.
